CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's tennis team has qualified for the National Christian College Athletic Association Championships, held in Mobile, Ala. at the Mobile Tennis Center from May 5-8.
The tournament format consists of two four-team pools and round-robin action that sees each of the teams in the pools play each other. The top two qualifiers from each pool will advance to the semi-finals.
The Lady Choctaws (9-8) will go into the tournament in Pool B, joined by Campbellsville University (12-8, NAIA), Dallas Baptist University (12-3, NCAA D-II) and Roberts Wesleyan College (11-10, NCAA D-II).
Pool A consists of Indiana Wesleyan (21-6, NAIA), McMurry University (15-3, NCAA D-III), Shorter University (16-5, NCAA D-II) and University of Northwestern (16-8, NCAA D-III).
The Lady Choctaws will open the tournament on Tuesday (May 5) at 8:30 a.m. against Roberts Wesleyan, followed by a 2:30 p.m. match against Campbellsville. Pool play will wrap up on Wednesday (May 6) at 8:30 a.m. against Dallas Baptist.
The semi-finals will take place on Thursday (May 7) at 9:00 a.m. with the championship on Friday (May 8) at 9:00 a.m.
The Lady Choctaws won three of their final four matches to qualify for the tournament, including a 6-3 win over North Alabama to close out Gulf South Conference play.
Freshman
Sofia Gonzalez-Carrera leads the team with an 11-5 mark at #1 singles. She is also 11-5 in doubles play, teaming up with sophomore
Christa Owen, who went 8-8 at #3 singles this season.
Freshman
Brenna Keller, who missed the first half of the season recovering from elbow surgery, has gone 4-0 in singles matches and is 7-3 with doubles partner, sophomore
Courtney Schrock.
The freshmen doubles team of
Karly Matthews and
Katie Reid round out the Lady Choctaw competitors, and the rookies went 8-7 this season. Matthews went 4-0 at #6 singles, while Reid was 7-8 at #2.
