HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softbal team used a 6-run sixth inning to pick up a 6-2 win over William Carey on Wednesday night.
The Lady Choctaws (24-18) went after the sweep in Game 2 of the doubleheader, but the Lady Crusaders (32-13) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second game.
In the opener, William Carey took an early lead when Lauren Russell singled home two runs with two outs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Junior
Carlie Sargent would keep the Lady Crusaders scoreless the rest of the way, tossing her 11th complete game of the season. The Oxford, Ala. native scattered eight hits with two strikeouts in the win.
The Lady Choctaws would remain scoreless until the sixth inning when senior
Karla Beth Hux and junior
Ashley Subervielle began the rally with a pair of singles.
Senior
Tori Bankston drove in Hux to cut the lead to 2-1 and Subervielle scored the game-tying run on an RBI single by senior
Brooke Smitherman.
MC would score the eventual game-winning runs on an RBI by junior
Kimmie Conley as she reached on an error and Bankston and Smitherman came home to score.
Senior
Macey Lee would give the Lady Choctaws two more insurance runs with a two-run single that scored senior
Bethany Fletcher and junior
Madison Oliver.
Sargent would give up a couple of base-runners over the last two innings, but MC would pick up the 6-2 win.
Lee and Hux led the team with two hits in the game, while six different players scored runs.
Relanda McFarland led the Lady Crusaders with two hits in the game. Brittany Lang tossed a complete game for WC, but allowed nine hits and six runs to take the loss.
In the second game, Hannah Moak pitched around five hits and four walks to pitch a complete game shutout for the Lady Crusaders.
They would get all the offense they needed when Lindsey Rowe drove in Cecilia Lawn with a two-out single in the first inning. They would tack on another run in the second for all the scoring in the contest.
The Lady Choctaws would leave eight runners on base with four getting to third. Hux led the MC offense, going 1-for-1 with two walks.
Senior
Lacie Patterson took the loss for MC, despite retiring 13 straight batters at one point. She allowed six and two earned runs over the complete game effort.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Georgia for a three-game series with Valdosta State University. The teams will play a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and play a single game on Saturday at noon.
