CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's tennis team had their three-match winning streak snapped with a 5-4 loss to Alabama Huntsville on Wednesday afternoon at the MC Tennis Complex.
The Lady Choctaws (6-5, 2-3 GSC) jumped out to a 2-1 lead with victories at #1 and #3 doubles. Sophomore
Christa Owen and freshman
Sofia Gonzalez-Carrera cruised to an 8-1 victory at #1, while the freshman team of
Karly Matthews and
Katie Reid won 8-6 at #3.
In singles play, Owen got MC another point with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #3 over Marta Briega. Sophomore
Courtney Schrock won the #4 singles match over Naomi Esteve by a score of 6-1, 6-3.
With UAH tying the match with wins at #2, #5 and #6, the overall match would come down to the #1 singles match between Gonzalez-Carrera and Marleen Gort. The two would split the first two sets, but Gort picked up a 6-3 win in the third to clinch the match for the Chargers (7-7, 4-2 GSC).
The Lady Choctaws will have a day off before playing back-to-back matches in Pensacola, Fla. against Valdosta State (Friday-2:00 p.m.) and West Florida (Saturday-9:00 a.m.).
