ARKADELPHIA, Ark. --- Senior
Macey Lee came up big with a two-run home run with two outs in the sixth innings to give the Mississippi College softball team a 2-1 win over Arkansas-Monticello at the Ronnie Hawkins Invitational, hosted by Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist.
The Lady Choctaws (1-1) began the day with a 5-3 loss to Missouri Western State before coming back with the dramatic victory on the opening day of the season.
MC was being held scoreless by the Boll Weevils over the first five innings, but senior
Tori Bankston singled up the middle, and Lee capitalized with a shot over the left field fence. The Pearl native notched her sixth career home run with the blast.
It was all the run support junior
Carlie Sargent would need as she would toss a complete game with 10 strikeouts and just three hits allowed. The only run UAM could muster was of the unearned variety in the second inning.
Senior
Shay Mickens led the MC offense in the game with two hits and a stolen base.
In the season opener against the Griffons, the Lady Choctaws would open up a two-run lead in the first on RBI singles by junior
Ashley Subervielle and senior
Brooke Smitherman. The two combined to go 4-for-6 with the two RBI and a run scored.
MWSU cut into the lead in the second with a solo home run by Janie Smith, but freshman
Katherine Lee came in to pinch-run in the fourth, stealing second and third and scoring on an error to push the lead back to 3-1.
The Griffons got another solo home run in the fourth, but the big blow came in the fifth inning when Morgan Rathmann nailed a two-run shot to put Missouri Western ahead, 4-3. They would tack on another run in the inning on an RBI double by Paige Shifflett.
The Lady Choctaws would put two runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but they could not convert and the Griffons held on for the victory.
