CLINTON, Miss. --- On a day that saw blinding rain prior to kickoff, the Mississippi College football team stood toe-to-toe to the top-ranked team in the country, but West Georgia picked up a 38-21 victory on Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
The Choctaws (2-6, 0-5 GSC) trailed 7-0 after an opening drive score by the Wolves (9-0, 5-0 GSC), but freshman quarterback
Walker Meadows found junior
Marcel Newson on MC's ensuing possession for a 27-yard touchdown pass to tie the score.
Newson had another big day for the Choctaws, catching eight passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Over his last two games, the Coldwater native has caught 15 balls for 279 yards and three touchdowns.
UWG would grab the lead back with a touchdown on their next drive and looked poised to push the score out, but senior
Lazarus Shelby came up with a strip sack, setting up the Choctaws at their own 29-yard line at the start of the second quarter.
On the very next play, the Choctaws pulled out some trickery with a double-reverse pass that saw Meadows find Newson for a 71-yard score to tie the game with 14:32 remaining in the half.
West Georgia took the lead on their next possession with a 10-play, 70-yard drive, but the score would remain 21-14 going into the halftime break as the Choctaws played right with the #1 team in the country.
The Wolves would push the lead out to 38-14 as they scored the first 17 points of the second half, but Newson was not done scoring as he recovered a fumbled punt and returned it seven yards for a score to cut the lead to 38-21 with 9:11 to go in the game.
The Choctaws would get one more crack on offense, but injuries that forced senior wide receiver
Payton Gray to take snaps at quarterback finally caught up, and the Wolves hung on for the victory.
Senior
Chris Ingram had a big night for the Choctaws, rushing for 97 yards on 26 carries, giving the Southaven native 1,063 career rushing yards. Ingram became the 31st player in school history to break the 1,000-yard rushing mark.
The Choctaws went a combined 15-for-21 passing for 186 yards and two scores. The MC defense held the Wolves to just 104 yards passing in the game.
Carl Rainey Jr. led the Choctaws with 11 tackles, including a sack on a fourth down in the fourth quarter. Shelby finished the game with three tackles, including two tackles for loss and one sack.
LeMarcus Franks led the UWG offense with 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Choctaws will go on the road for the final time this season as they travel to West Alabama next Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff in Livingston.
