Men's Soccer Opens NCCAA Tournament Monday Against Roberts Wesleyan

KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team will open the 2014 National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (Eastern) against Roberts Wesleyan College. The nine-team national tournament will be held at the Austin-Tindall Soccer Complex.

The tournament features three pools with the winners of each pool and a wild card team advancing to the semi-finals. MC is part of Pool A along with RWC and Palm Beach Atlantic. They will play PBA on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. (Eastern).

The Choctaws (12-5-1) enter the tournament as the #1 overall seed after winning the MidEast Regional at Longabaugh Field last weekend. They needed penalty kicks to defeat Campbellsville on Friday before shutting out Bluefield to pick up a 2-0 victory in the championship match.

Senior Brian Vasquez leads the MC offense with a school record 16 assists to go along with seven goals. He now has 39 career helpers, which is also an MC all-time record. Seniors Francisco DeAnda (10 goals) and Stephen Roberson (9 goals) are the team-leaders in goals this season.

Freshman goalkeeper Humberto Pelaez has been the team's main man between the pipes this season, posting a 1.65 goals against average with 57 saves in 15 starts. Junior Josh Barrera joined DeAnda, Roberson and Vasquez on the NCCAA All-MidEast Region Team, which was announced earlier this week.

The Redhawks (11-6-2) enter the tournament as the #9 overall seed after winning the East Regional over Houghton College last weekend. They have won their previous two matches by a combined score of 5-0, but lost their two matches prior by a score of 10-0.

Senior Michael Cunningham leads the team with 10 goals and nine assists, including two game-winning tallies. Senior Stephen Stewart has six goals with four assists on the year. Junior goalkeeper Michael Scavone has started all 19 matches in net for the Redhawks, posting a 1.04 goals against average with 70 saves.
