CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will put their new national ranking on the line this weekend when they host Union University and Christian Brothers University at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. MC will face Union on Friday and CBU on Sunday with both matches scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.The Lady Choctaws (7-3-1, 2-2-1 GSC) are coming off a big week where they went 2-0-1, outscoring their opponents, 12-5. MC opened last week with a 5-1 win over cross-town rival Millsaps and then picked up a home conference win over West Georgia, 6-3. They then traveled to Valdosta State and earned a draw with the Blazers, 1-1.
A balanced scoring attack has led MC this season with junior
Sayit Mejia Bello scoring seven goals and seniors
Melanie Benner and
Macey Lee adding six apiece. Mejia Bello had both of the team's game-winning goals last week, scoring one with an assist against Millsaps and scoring twice in the win over West Georgia.
Benner is MC's all-time leader with 29 career assists, pacing the team with six this season. She also leads the team with three game-winning goals and is tied with Mejia Bello for the team-high with 18 total points. Lee has now tallied 56 career goals, which ranks second in school history behind Jennifer Benson (2003-06) with 58. She is also second in MC history with 130 total points, sitting behind Benson, who had 135.
Junior
Robin Cooper has started all 11 matches in net for the Lady Choctaws, posting a 1.40 goals against average with 27 saves and a shutout. The MC back line, led by junior
Meghan Dodge, has been stout this season, only allowing more than one goal four times this season. Dodge recorded her first assist of the season in the draw with Valdosta State on Sunday.
The Lady Bulldogs (2-6, 0-4 GSC) have struggled out of the gate in conference play, dropping their first four matches. On their current four-match losing streak they have scored just three goals while allowing 10. Last time out against Alabama Huntsville, Union was knotted up into the second half against a team that defeated the Lady Choctaws, 4-1.
Honeye Heydari leads the team with four goals and nine total points. She has scored both the team's game-winners, while no other Lady Bulldog has more than one goal on the season. Kayleigh Patterson and Elizabeth Clark are tied for the team-lead with two assists apiece. Kristen Francis has started six games in net this season, posting a 2.24 goals against average with 33 saves.
The Lady Bucs (8-2, 4-2 GSC) have won eight of their first 10 matches to open the season with their two losses coming by one goal apiece. Their biggest win of the season came on September 28th when they traveled to West Florida and picked up a 4-2 win over the preseason favorites to win the conference.
Camilla Rodrigues and Mariana Tonelli are the team leaders with five goals apiece, while Rodrigues has a team-high seven assists. Alex Bickenbach, Katelyn Graham and Ellen Garner each have three goals for the Lady Bucs. Robyn Wade has started nine matches in net, posting a 0.78 goals against average with 27 saves and five shutouts.
This will be the first-ever meeting between MC and Union. The Lady Choctaws faced Christian Brothers to open the 1998 season, falling 1-0 in the only meeting.
