CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team will be back on the field for the first time in 12 days when they host Union University on Friday at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. They will also host Christian Brothers University on Sunday afternoon with both matches scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
The Choctaws (6-3, 1-2 GSC) have not played a home match since they hosted Delta State on September 16th, falling to the Statesmen, 4-2. Over the 24 days since playing a home match, MC has played four straight on the road, coming away with three wins and an overtime loss. They opened with a 3-2 win at Ouachita Baptist on September 19th and then picked up a 1-0 overtime victory in a non-conference tilt with Christian Brothers when
Stephen Roberson scored a walk-off goal. MC then went to Alabama Huntsville and lost in overtime, 2-1, before traveling to West Alabama and getting a 4-3 victory.
Senior
Brian Vasquez has led the offensive attack with five goals and seven assists on the season. He now has 25 career goals with 30 career assists, making him one of four active Division II players that have completed that feat. The former American Southwest Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year has one game-winning goal and his five goals have come on eight shots on net.
Roberson also have five goals for the MC offense, scoring four in the last four matches, including two in the victory over Ouachita Baptist. He tallied both game-winning goals in wins over OBU and Christian Brothers.
Defensively, the Choctaws are led by senior
Josh Barrera, who scored a late goal against Alabama Huntsville that sent the match into overtime. He also tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the victory over West Alabama. Freshman
Humberto Pelaez has started eight matches in net this season, posting a 1.94 goals against average and two shutouts, but he will not be available for this game due to a red card issued in the last match against West Alabama. Senior
Pedro Hernandez will get the start and he has yet to allow a goal in over 120 minutes played.
The Bulldogs (1-7, 0-4 GSC) have seen each of their seven losses come by one goal, including two straight 1-0 defeats to West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville coming into the matchup with MC. Union lost in overtime to West Florida and double overtime to Spring Hill at home. Their win came on September 12th against Oakland City University, 3-1.
Alex Pratt is the team's leading scorer with four goals, while Guilherme Dorigo and Paul Langford have two goals apiece. Dorigo has a team-high three assists, while Nil Cierco has two helpers. Taylor Smith has played the majority of the minutes in net for the Bulldogs, posting a 2.19 goals against average with 34 saves. Matt Kesler started last time out, allowing just one goal in 90 minutes against Alabama Huntsville.
The Bucs (7-2, 3-1 GSC) come into the weekend with three wins in their last four matches, only allowing two total goals in that span. They picked up two 1-0 victories over Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama in their last two matches. CBU will play Delta State on Friday at 4:00 p.m. before making the trip to Clinton for Sunday's match.
Jose Ferraz is the leads the team and is tied for the conference lead with nine goals on the season. Four different Bucs have scored twice on the year, while five players have tallied two assists. Britton McGuire has played all but 20 minutes in net for the Bucs, posting a 0.79 goals against average with 21 saves and three shutouts, including two straight.
The Choctaws will face Union for the first time in school history on Friday, while their meeting with CBU will be the second of the season after MC picked up a 1-0 overtime victory in a non-conference match on September 22nd.
