CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team will open a three-match homestand this weekend that will close out the 2014 regular season. On Friday, they will host Spring Hill at 3:00 p.m., and on Sunday the Choctaws will face West Florida at 3:00 p.m at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
Announced on Wednesday, the Choctaws (8-5, 3-4 GSC) are ranked 9th in the most recent National Christian College Athletic Association DI Top 10 Rankings. They are coming off a strong 4-0 win over Lee (Tenn.) that saw junior
Ewahia Amhanesi score twice and senior
Stephen Roberson score once and tally an assist.
Leading the Choctaw offense is senior
Brian Vasquez with five goals and 12 assists, giving him 35 career helpers to set the best mark in school history. Roberson leads the team with eight goals to go along with three assists.
The Choctaw defense is led by senior
Josh Barrera who has tallied three goals on the season including the game-winning goal in the victory over West Alabama. In goal for the Choctaws is freshman
Humberto Pelaez with 40 saves and a 2.01 goals against average. He has faced 144 shots allowing only 22 in the back of the net.
Spring Hill (3-8, 2-4 GSC) has tallied nine goals on the season. Their offense has been a balanced effort as Eric Swing, Mario Escalante, and Dinard Garrett have each put in two goals this season. In the net for the Badgers is Patrick Danner who has faced 86 shots and posted a 1.80 goals against average with 27 saves.
West Florida (5-6-2, 3-2-1 GSC) have seen a total of 29 goals scored in their 15 matches this season. The offense is led by Felipe Oliveira with four goals scored, while Pablo Paz has chipped in three. Jorge Chirinos leads the team with four assists. Andre Moreira and Stuart McCrory have split time in net for the Argonauts. Moreira leads the team with a 0.83 goals against average.
The Choctaws are 3-3 all-time against Spring Hill, winning three straight before falling in their last meeting with the Badgers, 4-3. This will be the first-ever meeting between MC and West Florida.
