Lady Choctaws Face Stiff Road Tests at Shorter and Lee

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will look to keep their NCCAA Tournament hopes alive when they travel for two Gulf South Conference matches this weekend. They will face Shorter on Friday at 4:00 p.m. (CT) and Lee on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. (CT).

The Lady Choctaws (8-4-1, 3-3-1 GSC) have won three of their last five matches with the only loss coming to GSC-leading Christian Brothers last Sunday, 3-1. With five matches remaining, MC needs two victories to collect double-digit wins for the 13th straight season. The 2001 season was the last they did not win at least 10, going 9-6 on the season.

The balanced offensive attack is led by three players with at least six goals, paced by junior Sayit Mejia Bello with eight goals. She has scored two game-winners to go along with four assists. Senior Melanie Benner is tied with Mejia Bello for the team-lead with 20 total points. The Seminole, Fla. native has six goals and eight assists, giving her an MC record 31 helpers in her career.

Senior Macey Lee is second on the team with seven goals scored this season, giving her 57 in her career. The Pearl native set an MC record with 25 goals in 2013 and is just two shy of setting MC's all-time record. Jennifer Benson (2003-06) holds the school record with 58 goals.

The MC defense, led by junior Meghan Dodge and sophomore Madison Leonard, is allowing a goals against average of 1.66 this season. Junior goalkeeper Robin Cooper is 8-3-1 on the season with 33 saves and a 1.53 GAA.

The Lady Hawks (8-4, 3-4 GSC) opened the season with four straight non-conference wins and have collected victories in four of their last six matches, including a 1-0 win over Alabama Huntsville last Friday. Last time out, West Alabama shut out Shorter with a 2-0 victory on Sunday.

Corrie Thomas is the team-leader with six goals, including five game-winners, while Julia Raymond tops the squad with five assists. Alden Powell has started all 12 matches for Shorter, making 57 saves with a 0.84 goals against average.

The Lady Flames (6-4-1, 5-1 GSC) began the year with just one win in their first five matches but have gotten hot lately, winning five of their last six with the only loss coming to West Florida, 2-1. In their last match, Lee grabbed a 1-0 win over West Alabama, a team that had lost just one GSC match on the season.

Nicole Blanchard is the team leader with six goals, while Kinsey Cichowitz has a team-high three assists to go along with three goals. The Lee defense has posted a 0.80 goals against average, led by goalkeeper Marbel Egwuenu, who has started eight matches and posted a 0.84 GAA with 35 saves.

This will be the first-ever meeting between the Lady Choctaws and their two opponents this season.
