Mississippi Colege Athletics

Mississippi College junior defender Phillip Applewhite has been selected as this week's Mississippi College Men's Athlete of the Week for his play last week leading the men's soccer team to a 2-0-1 record.

Applewhite, a Madison native, set the tone in the 4-1 win over Division II Delta State by scoring the game's opening goal on an assist from Drew Ziegler. Applewhite also scored the Choctaws' only goal in a 1-1 tie of William Carey University. Applewhite's goal came in the 84th minute on a penalty kick to tie the score.

Applewhite played last season at Hinds Community College earning All-State honors. He played in high school at Madison Central earning All-District honors twice and was selected to play in the MHSAA All-Star game.
