Junior Winceton Edwards has been named the Mississippi College Merit Health Male Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday (Dec. 9).
Edwards (Meridian, Miss.) scored 40 points in just 42 minutes played over a 2-0 week that included wins over Southeastern Baptist and Talladega. The Jones County JC transfer shot 50% (7-of-14) from the three-point line and hit 11-of-12 free throws over two wins.
On Tuesday, Edwards went 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from long range on his way to 17 points against SBC. In the win over NAIA #10 Talladega, Winceton led the Choctaws with 23 points off the bench, hitting all nine of his free throws, including four in the final seconds to clinch the victory.
On the season, Edwards is MC's leading scorer and ranks 7th in the Gulf South Conference with 17.3 points per game. He also ranks 2nd in the league in free throw percentage (87%), 3rd in three-point percentage (.436) and 15th in field goal percentage (.460).
Edwards and the Choctaws have two more games to play in 2019, traveling for a pair of GSC contests. They will face Christian Brothers on Sunday (Dec. 15) before heading to Cleveland to play rival Delta State on December 21st.
