Junior Alejandro Chavarria has been named the Mississippi College Merit Health Male Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday (Oct. 7).
Chavarria (Madrid, Spain) led the Choctaws to a 1-0-1 week in Gulf South Conference road action, earning a draw against Lee on Friday before securing a 2-0 shutout win over Shorter on Sunday.
On the week, Chavarria allowed just one goal on a penalty kick and combined for 11 saves against 25 shots faced over 200 minutes played. He tied a season-high with seven saves against the Flames, facing a season-high 19 shots. In the win over the Hawks, the USC-Aiken transfer tallied his 5th shutout of the season.
On the year, Chavarria leads the GSC in goals against average (0.502), shutouts per game (.556), total saves (46), save percentage (.902) and saves per game (5.11).
The Choctaws will be back in action this weekend at home when they host Union (Oct. 11) and Christian Brothers (Oct. 13) at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
