CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College football team picked up their first victory since making the transition back to NCAA Division II with a 56-14 win over University of Faith on Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
Senior
Dylan Klibert led the Choctaws (1-4) with two interceptions and a fumble recovery, taking two turnovers back for touchdowns in the win. Sophomore
Joseph Comeaux also returned a fumble for a score as the MC defense outscored the Glory Eagles (0-6) by themselves, 21-14. Klibert also led the team with seven tackles, including 1.5 for loss in the victory.
"What a great day for this program," said head coach
John Bland. "These guys deserved to experience some success. It's been a bit of a rough year, but I thought the guys played so well and deserved the win."
Junior
Chris Ingram put the Choctaws on the board in the first quarter with a 33-yard touchdown run that capped a four-play, 72-yard drive and gave MC a 7-0 victory. Ingram led a rushing attack that posted a season-high 276 yards on 47 carries, rushing the ball 15 times for 100 yards and two scores, himself. Junior
K.C. Paxton had eight carries for 75 yards and a touchdown in the second half.
With 4:15 remaining in the first quarter Klibert forced his first turnover with a 21-yard interception return that put the Choctaws ahead 14-0. Freshman quarterback
Kyle Smith rushed in from nine yards out to open the second quarter and push the advantage to 21-0. Klibert struck again with 2:05 left in the first half, forcing a fumble and carrying it back 58 yards for a touchdown. MC would take the 28-0 lead into the break.
After a
Chris Ingram six-yard touchdown to open the second half, the Glory Eagles got on the board when quarterback Brandon Hames rushed in from six yards out to cut the score to 35-6. The MC defense held Faith to 32 rushing ayrds on 38 carries, icluding 62 yards lost rushing.
Sophomore
Adrian Cerrato opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run, capping a five-play, 41-yard drive. After Faith scored on a long passing touchdown, the Choctaws answered back as Paxton ran in from 41 yards out with 5:10 remaining to push the lead to 49-14. Comeaux closed out the scoring with a 17-yard fumble return after a forced fumble by junior
Lazarus Shelby that gave MC the 42-point win.
Senior
Jake Weddle and Klibert led the team with seven tackles, while freshman
Brannon Schaffer led the way with 3.0 tackles for loss, including 2.0 sacks. The Choctaws had five sacks in the game as sophomore
Ashford Ashiofu, junior
C.J. O'Quinn and Shelby also recorded sacks. MC had 14.0 tackles for loss in the game.
The Choctaws will be back in action next Saturday for "Homecoming" as they host Valdosta State at 3:00 p.m. at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
