CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College track and field teams open the 2016 season on Friday, Dec. 4 at the Birmingham Southern hosted Indoor Icebreaker. The season opening meet is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start.
 
"We are looking forward to the start of indoor season. This first meet is kind of like a reward for them since they have been practicing since September," said head coach Butch Ard. "Because we don't want to overload them in the first meet, we are only letting them pick a couple of events to run each. Both teams are very young and inexperienced, so this meet will give them the opportunity to run against higher level competition."
 
Anna Grace Govero returns for her sophomore season with the Lady Choctaws. The Clinton, Miss., native was the NCCAA Indoor Pentathlon National Champion last season after victories in three of the five events and a total of 3,127 points.
 
Also returning for the Lady Choctaws is Deidre Forbes who will run in the 60 meters and 200 meters. The junior ran a college-best in the NCCAA Indoor National Championships with a 7.36 in the 55 meters and an 8.09 in the 60 meters at the Engineer Invitational.
 
Junior Shawn Robertson returns for the Choctaws. Robertson, who ran a college-best 7.49 in the 60 meters last season at the BSC Indoor Icebreaker, will compete in the 200 and 400 meters for the Navy and Gold.
 
Oliver Kjeldsen headlines the top newcomers for Mississippi College. The Beder, Denmark, product will compete in the long Jump and 60 hurdles in Birmingham, Ala., this weekend.
 
Following the season opener, Mississippi College returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Emory Indoor Invitational.
