SEGUIN, TX - The 8th-ranked Mississippi College Choctaws (35-7) needed extra innings and a dominant effort from reliever
Daniel Cowart, but came through with a 9-5 win over host Texas Lutheran University (31-12) on the first day of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament.
Cowart entered the game in the fifth inning in relief of starter
Tyler Seaman, and worked the final 5 2/3 innings allowing no runs on three hits with ten strikeouts. Cowart earned the win to improve to 2-1 this season.
With game tied at 5-5 each, the Choctaws put up four runs in the top of the tenth inning to take a commanding 9-5 lead over the Bulldogs. The Choctaws took advantage of two TLU errors to go with a pair of hits from
Bo Bell and
Brannon Walls.

Chase Herrin went 4-6 for the Choctaws with a triple and scored three runs.
Bo Bell finished the day with three hits and two RBI.
Chris Glaze picked up a pair of hits including a leadoff singe in the eighth inning that resulted in him scoring the game-tying run.
The Choctaws advance to tomorrow's winners bracket game where they will face ASC East Division rival University of Texas at Tyler. Texas Tyler was a 5-4 winner over Hardin-Simmons University of the first game of the day. Game time tomorrow is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
