Day One Results
ABILENE, TX - The Mississippi track and field team opened the American Southwest Conference Track and Field Championships with a solid performance at Hardin-Simmons University. The women's team sits in fourth place with 20 total points, while the men's team has only four points, but is set up nicely with the majority of the running events on Saturday.
Ivy Price opened the meet with a second place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 12:27.
Jennifer Cooper finished the day with a 10,000m first-place finish with a time of 42:17.
On the men's side,
Joel Garrison took second place in the triple jump with a mark of 44', while
Deoante Rivers claimed fourth place with a jump of 42'8".
"The win was really tough today, and it played havoc on all the events. It is difficult for the jumpers to hit their marks, and I know on Saturday, when the wind is expected to be 25 mph plus, the performances will get worse."
"The girls ran great today. Ivy has been battling some sickness, but still came out second in the Steeple. We were hoping to break the conference record in that, but it just wasn't to be today."
" Jennifer did very well in the 10k. She led from start to finish and set a new meet record. The amazing thing about setting the record was the fact that she ran a lap too many. The old record was 42:19, and Jennifer's time of 42:17 still set the new mark, but we were very disappointed that the laps were messed up. She was running 6:30 pace throughout the race, and I had her at 40:36 for what should have been the finish, but the lap counter wasn't sure and the made her run an extra lap. So the official time will stand as 42:17."
"Saturday should be a good day for us. I am looking forward to a few more event wins."
