Louisiana College junior forward Tillisha Givens and Hardin-Simmons University junior center Lindsey Newcombe have been named division players of the year to headline the 2010 American Southwest Conference Women’s Basketball All-Conference and All-Division selections, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (March 2), following a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches.

Givens (Monroe, LA / Ouachita Baptist HS) earned the title of ASC East Division Player of the Year for the second straight season. She averaged a division-high 16 points and 8.4 rebounds per game to fuel the Lady Wildcats’ first ever conference and division title. She also averaged a league-high 36.8 minutes played per game.

Newcombe (Keller, TX / KHS) was named ASC West Division Player of the Year after averaging 15.2 points and leading the conference in rebounding (11.2) and blocked shots (2.3) per game. Newcombe, who shared the division player of the honor last year with now graduate Concordia University Texas standout Kassandra Bills, also posted a league-best field goal percentage of 57.5.

Givens and Newcombe were each selected to their respective All-Division first team. Givens was also named to the prestigious five-player ASC All-Conference Team. She was joined by University of Texas at Dallas senior point guard Chelsea Edwards (Friendswood, TX / FHS), Louisiana College junior guard Christy Pantallion (Alexandria, LA / Bolton HS), University of Mary Hardin-Baylor senior forward Kallie White (Kingsland, TX / Llano HS) and Howard Payne University senior forward Hope Hohertz (Priddy, TX / PHS). Edwards, who was recently named one of ten national finalists for the Jostens Trophy, led the East with 105 assists and 81 steals. Pantallion averaged 14.6 points and 2.5 steals, White shot 45.3 percent from 3-point range and guided UMHB’s first West title, and Hohertz averaged 11.7 points and seven rebounds.

Edwards doubled as ASC East Division Defensive Player of the Year. University of Texas at Tyler guard/forward Paige Parrish (McKinney, TX / Boyd HS) earned freshman of the year honors after averaging 16 points per game, while Mississippi College junior forward Jennifer Wair (Camden, MS / Meridian CC) was named the division’s top newcomer after snagging 8.8 rebounds per contest. Texas-Tyler sophomore guard Lindsay Hausmann (Austin, TX / Lake Travis HS) earned the title of ASC East Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Louisiana College’s Janice Joseph-Richard, who guided a perfect 13-0 home record and the first ever ASC championship for an East Divison team, was dubbed coach of the year.

Mary Hardin-Baylor senior guard Jessica Kelly (Hewitt, TX / Midway HS) was named ASC East Division Defensive Player of the Year after guiding a unit that allowed a West Division-low 57.4 points per game. Concordia Texas point guard Margaret Milling (Fort Worth, TX / Paschal HS) was voted the West’s top freshman after leading the conference with 94 steals, while McMurry University’s LaPorsha Alexander (Humble, TX / Parris JC) was dubbed the top newcomer after averaging 12.8 points and leading her squad to the title game of the ASC tournament. Sul Ross State University freshman guard Misha Henderson (Anderson, TX / Anderson-Shiro HS) was named ASC West Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Kim Kirkpatrick-Thornton took coach of the year honors after guiding the Lady Cru to a 21-6 record and their first West Division crown.
