BELTON, TX - The Mississippi College men's basketball team advanced to the semi-finals of the American Southwest Conference Men's Championship Tournament with an 89-78 win over Concordia Texas on Friday night at the Mayborn Campus Center on the campus of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Senior forward
Donnie Haywood led the way for the Choctaws with 27 points on 5-10 shooting from the floor and 17-19 shooting from the foul line. As a team, MC went 28-41 from the line, including going 18-25 in the second half.
The game did not start off well for the Choctaws, as Concordia jumped out to a 28-16 lead with 8:05 remaining in the first half. MC would close out the first half on a 27-8 run to take a 43-36 lead into the halftime break.
The second half started off much the same as the Tornados came out firing and had a 60-55 advantage with 11:49 remaining. The Choctaws would come back to win the game on the strength of a 44-28 rebounding edge in the contest.
Senior forward
Chazz Hawkins would be the only other player in double-figures for MC, scoring 13 points on 5-7 shooting, including making both three-point opportunities. As a team, the Choctaws make 7-10 long-range shots to pull away for the victory.
Concordia used a strong effort from senior Brad Walker, who scored 15 points off the bench. Tayler Jacobs, Nick Haynes, and Kenny Williams each added 11 points.
The Choctaws will move on to face the winner between the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and the University of Texas at Tyler at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon.
