CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College baseball team will host the 2009 American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship Round at Frierson Field. Mississippi College is the #1 seed out of the ASC East with a 28-14 record overall and a 14-4 conference mark. The Choctaws advanced to the Championship Round by defeating Mary Hardin-Baylor in two games in the First Round Series. MC won 3-2 and 14-4 to host this weekend's tournament.
The Choctaws are led at the plate by junior
Bo Bell who batted .437 with 12 home runs and 12 doubles. Bell has also driven in 67 runs on the season, which is the second highest total in school history. MC set a conference record with 99 stolen bases in 115 attempts this season.
The Choctaw pitching staff is led by seniors
Brett Hinson and
Jack Craven and junior
Tyler Seaman. Hinson (9-2) leads the team with 4.17 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 77.2 innings pitched. Seaman (5-2) has been named National Pitcher of the Week twice this season with two no-hit efforts. Craven (5-2) won the ASC East Divsion clinching game at Texas-Tyler with an 11-7 win over the Patriots.
Texas-Dallas is the #3 seed out of the ASC East with a 27-16 overall record and a 12-6 mark in the ASC. The Comets advanced to the Championship Round by defeating Hardin-Simmons in a three-game series in Abilene. After falling 15-11 in the first game, UTD pounded out two wins by scores of 14-12 and 19-11 to move on.
The Comets are the hottes team in the ASC with 14 wins in their last 15 games. They are led at the plate by senior Jared Smith and junior Cody Ross. Smith leads the nation with 23 home runs and is second nationally in runs driven in with 71. Ross leads the nation with 81 hits and is second with 63 runs scored and 21 doubles.
Damion Chelakis, Mason Thompson, and Drew Waggoner are the three starters for the Comets. Chelakis (6-1) leads the team with a 5.75 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched. Waggoner (4-4) leads the team with 50 strikeouts in 54.1 innings pitched. Thompson (4-3) leads the team with 59.0 innings pitched on the season.
Texas Lutheran is the #1 seed out of the ASC West with a 30-12 overall record and a 16-5 conference record. The Bulldogs advanced to the Championship Round by defeating Ozarks in two games in Seguin. TLU only allowed one run in the two games winning 10-1 and 2-0.
Senior Jeremy Macklin and junior Ryan Nokelby lead the Bullodgs at the plate with .463 and .415 batting averages, respectively. Macklin is second in the ASC with 17 doubles and third in the conference with 74 hits and 65 RBI. Senior Kyle Harvey leads the ASC with 28 stolen bases in 30 attempts.
Brad Orosey and Macklin lead the pitching staff for the Bulldogs. Orosey is the top winner in the ASC with a 10-1 record and a 3.54 ERA. Orosey has 81 strikeouts in 84.0 innings pitched. Macklin is 6-1 on the year with a 1.17 ERA in 38.1 innings.
Texas-Tyler is the #2 seed out of the ASC East with a 34-9 overall record and a 14 mark in the ASC. The Patriots advanced to the Championship Round by defeating McMurry in a three-game series in Tyler. After falling 3-2 in the first game, the Patriots moved on by winning 10-0 and 4-3.
The Patriots have a balanaced offensive attack with all nine starters batting over .329. Jeremy Harding leads the team with a .406 batting average and 17 doubles. Joe Towns, Chad Daleiden, and Brock Lemire each lead Texas-Tyler with 10 home runs apiece.
The pitching staff is led by starters Brett Holland and Blake Booher and closer Beau Ziegler. Holland is 9-4 with a 2.49 ERA and has 106 strikeouts in 76.0 innings. Booher is undefeated this season with a 9-0 record and a 2.90 ERA in 59.0 innings. Ziegler has collected six saves and a 3-1 mark in 21 appearances with a 1.67 ERA.
