CLINTON, MS - Mississippi College Head Coach Norman Joseph has been selected as the Division III Region 3 Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association after leading his Choctaw team to a 9-3 record and American Southwest Conference Championship.
Under Joseph's leadership, the Choctaws won their first ASC title since the 1997 season and reached the NCAA Playoffs for the first time since the 1991 season. Senior quarterback Adam Shaffer also was selected as one of three finalists for the Cellular South Conerly Trophy under his guidance, and is also one of the ten finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy given each year to the most outstanding player in Division III.
Coach Joseph is in his fifth season at Mississippi College after taking over a program that went a combined 3-17 the two previous seasons. In the last three seasons, Coach Joseph has led the Choctaws to a 22-10 record with records of 8-2, 5-5 and 9-3. This year marked the first time in program history that the Choctaws posted wins over ASC powers Hardin-Simmons and Mary Hardin-Baylor in the same season.
Coach Joseph was also recognized earlier this year as the ASC Coach of the Year.
