ALPINE, TX - The #22 Mississippi College Choctaws (7-2, 6-1 ASC) jumped on Sul Ross State University (2-7, 2-5 ASC) building a 42-0 lead in the first half and cruised to an easy 49-27 American Southwest Conference win. The win puts the Choctaws one win away from the NCAA playoffs and their first ASC Championship since 1998.
The Choctaws were on the scoreboard early as
Austin Divinity took the game's opening kickoff to the house for an 88-yard touchdown, and the route was on from there. MC senior quarterback
Adam Shaffer passed for 363 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions in the victory.
MC tailback Stephen Knight, the ASC's leading rusher this year, went over the 100-yard mark for the sixth straight game with 102 yards on 19 carries in the win. Knight also hauled in a 33-yard touchdown reception from Shaffer.
Freshman fullback
Palmer Askew accounted for two touchdowns on receptions from Shaffer.
Wesley Boudreaux and
Brent Thompson also hauled in touchdown receptions. Senior
Brannon Walls booted through a 20-yard field goal and the defense collected two safeties to account for the scoring.
The Choctaw defense allowed just 42 yards of total offense to Sul ross in the first half with the starters in the game. The defense was led by
Quartez Ashmore and
Luke Petitto with each finishing with twelve tackles. Ashmore also had four tackles for loss, one sack and forced a fumble.
Nolan Willisson also had four tackles for loss and a sack among his nine stops.
The Choctaws return home this week to face Texas Lutheran. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
