GREENSBORO, NC - Sophomore
Jennifer Cooper finished seventh individually at the NCAA Southeast Regionals on Saturday, November 14th and qualified for the NCAA Nationals Meet in Cleveland, OH on Saturday, November 21st. Cooper's finish led the Lady Choctaws to a 13th place team finish.
Jennifer earned a First Team All-Region selection for her efforts. After finishing third in the ASC Championships, The Lady Choctaws came back to be the top placing ASC team in the NCAA South Region Championships.
"Jennifer had an outstanding race. With the sloppy conditions, it was important to get out to a good start and get in good position from the start. Jennifer was able to do that, and it put her in good position for the rest of the race. The course was really sloppy and slick. We have mud here when it rains, but at the course this weekend it was muddy clay, which is more slippery. Ida dropped several inches of rain on the days before the meet, but we were used to that kind of condition, so it wasn't anything new for us. In spite of the muddy conditions, Jennifer had her best race of the year with a 24:04 for the 6k race."
"Jennifer now gets to go Cleveland and run against the best in the country. I think she will do well. She is a great runner, and runners like her will thrive when the competition get tougher. It will be a great experience for her to get to compete in a national meet, and it is a great stride forward for our program to have our first female to compete in the national cross country meet. Hopefully now we will start sending more."
Will Clingon led the men's cross country team to a 13th place finish in the NCAA South Region Championships in Greensboro, NC on Saturday. Will placed 45th overall in the men's race, and was followed closely by Shane Brogdon, Donny Gable, Tino Gonzalez, and Casey Keiser.
"The men didn't have a great race, but those things happen sometimes. I am sure the course conditions had a lot to do with it, with most runners in the meet running times well slower than their normal. After winning the ASC Conference Championships, we felt pretty good about our chances of being a top seven team, but we just ran kind of flat today. It wasn't for lack of effort, you just have those days. Still the men had a good year, and I am really proud of them."
